چکیده

It is estimated that more than 80% of data that human beings have collected so far are geospatial data. In order for the geospatial data to be useful, information has to be extracted from the data and converted to knowledge. However, currently it is very difficult for general users to obtain geospatial data and turn them into useful information and knowledge. In order for geospatial information to become the mainstream information, the geospatial information systems have to be able to provide the ready-to-use information that fits the individual users’ needs. This paper presents the distributed geospatial services which can fully automate data discovery, access, and integration steps of the geospatial knowledge discovery process under the interoperable service framework, fully automate a rang of geo-computational services at a limited geospatial domain, and greatly facilitate the construction of complex geocomputation services and modeling. The paper discusses the service-oriented architecture, web services, Grid services, geospatial services, geo-object and geo-tree concepts and their implementation in the service environment, and the interoperable geospatial service standards. It also discusses some advanced research issues related to automatic geospatial information extraction and knowledge discovery in the web service environment, including automated geospatial data and services discovery, domain knowledge-driven intelligent geo-object decomposition, automated geospatial web service chaining, binding, and execution, and management of workflows and geospatial models.

The application of distributed software architectures is a common trend in geospatial analysis. On the basis of service oriented architectures, web services are used to provide and process geospatial data. Especially in the European public administration, the implementation of the INSPIRE directive makes the use of standardized web services mandatory. The web services protocol and interface sta...

Scalable and Extensible Infrastructures for Distributing Interoperable Geographic Information Services on the Internet

The explosive growth in Internet-powered services has fueled the quest for finding new killer Internet-based applications. This quest has often led to applications based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), especially in the emerging field of the Mobile Internet. Unfortunately, the traditional GIS model falls short of accommodating the requirements and needs of the Internet environment. A m...

Service-oriented applications for environmental models: Reusable geospatial services

Environmental modelling often requires a long iterative process of sourcing, reformatting, analyzing, and introducing various types of data into the model. Much of the data to be analyzed are geospatial data — digital terrain models (DTM), river basin boundaries, snow cover from satellite imagery, etc.— and so the modelling workflow typically involves the use of multiple desktop GIS and remote ...

From Here to Eternity: An Experiment Applying the e-Framework Infrastructure for Education and Research and the SUMO Ontology to Standards-based Geospatial Web Services

A number of efforts have been made in recent years to define standards for the description of resources (including web services) in services oriented architectures. These standards often use description logic ontologies (for example, OWL-S) and are intended to be machine-readable. They have been applied to geospatial web services to describe the functions that those services perform in a way th...

GeoWeb Crawler: An Extensible and Scalable Web Crawling Framework for Discovering Geospatial Web Resources

With the advance of the World-Wide Web (WWW) technology, people can easily share content on the Web, including geospatial data and web services. Thus, the “big geospatial data management” issues start attracting attention. Among the big geospatial data issues, this research focuses on discovering distributed geospatial resources. As resources are scattered on the WWW, users cannot find resource...
